What is Jackal?

Jackal is an independent art space right in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

We’re a place for exhibitions, workshops, talks and events that get people thinking and connecting.

For emerging artists looking to share their work, Jackal offers a supportive environment to explore ideas, collaborate on group or solo shows, and develop artist talks and workshops. It’s a place to grow, experiment and connect with the local community.

For established artists who are looking to push boundaries and question the way things are done, Jackal provides the opportunity to exhibit your work outside of the usual ‘white cube’ gallery setting.

We’re housed in an 18th-century building full of character, with a façade that’s over 140 years old. The original details we’ve restored continue to inspire the artists who work here, from the range that once cooked meals and heated the building, to the walls full of history.

We’re also home to the Women Making Art Reading Room, a growing collection of books by and about women artists.

Two galleries are currently open, with a third on the way. The spaces are flexible and available to hire, whether you need a single area or the whole building.

Jackal was founded by artist and curator Mills Jackson Rowe to carve out a space for art that’s accessible and has bite.
