Jackal is an independent art space right in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed, founded by artist and curator Mills.
We’re a place for exhibitions, workshops, talks and events that get people thinking and connecting.
Jackal Print Exchange: Opening Event
Sunday 11th October | Doors 1.45pm | Event 2-4pm
Join us at Jackal for the opening of the first Jackal Print Exchange, bringing together 27 artists and 27 original prints from across the UK, from Orkney to Somerset.
The afternoon begins with Women and Printmaking: Voices from the North, a presentation by Prof. Maria Chester exploring the women who transformed the art and industry of printmaking across Scotland and Northeast England.
From studio artists to commercial printmakers, Maria will look at their technical mastery, creative innovation and cultural insight, and the contributions they made to a field where women have often been overlooked. Through regional case studies and striking visual examples, she will explore how women shaped the printed heritage of the North, leaving impressions that continue to influence contemporary art and design.
The talk begins at 2pm and will last around 45 minutes, followed by a Q&A. Afterwards, there will be time to explore the exhibition, meet other attendees and artists, and enjoy some refreshments.
The exhibition features the 27 prints kept from the Jackal Print Exchange, where participating artists each created five original prints, with four randomly assigned to other participating artists and one contributed to the exhibition.
Booking is essential as places are limited. There is no separate ticket for the talk - it is included with your booking for the opening event.
The event finishes at 4pm. Entry is free.
This event is part of the Art History Festival 2026, organised by the Association for Art History.
Jackal Print Exchange Exhibition
Printmaking as a long history of bringing artists together to share their work, exchange ideas and connect with other makers. With the first Jackal Print Exchange, we wanted to bring some of that spirit to Berwick-upon-Tweed.
We invited artists to create an edition of five original prints. Four were randomly assigned to other participating artists, with one retained for this exhibition at Jackal. The result is a collection of 27 prints by artists from Orkney to Somerset, showcasing a range of approaches and techniques, from collagraph to linocut.
Printmaking as a democratic quality that we value at Jackal: an idea can become an original artwork without the need for an expensive studio or specialist equipment.
We’re bringing all 27 prints together at Jackal from 11th October to 4th November 2026. Entry is free and prints will be available to buy.
