Jackal

Independent Art Space

30 Hide Hill, Berwick-upon-Tweed

What is Jackal?

Jackal is an independent art space right in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed, founded by artist and curator Mills Jackson Rowe.

We’re a place for exhibitions, workshops, talks and events that get people thinking and connecting.

Kathryn Elkin and Lauren Velvick present: Special Collections, a live event series and podcast that rethinks how we understand the archival.

For the first event we were joined by Lancashire dialect folk singer Jennifer Reid, who performed an impressive collection of 19th century working-class ballads.

Folk music cannot be owned. It belongs to the people. It is never stagnant—always shifting, reshaped by the lives and struggles of those who carry it forward. This listening session invites you to listen to the creative and radical ways individuals and communities have reclaimed songs and musical traditions to resist oppression and confront colonial violence.

For this second edition of Special Collections we invite you to join us at Jackal to spend the afternoon with Ellie Armon Azoulay, who will lead us through strands of her research at 2:30pm, followed by a short break and then a Q&A session which will go towards a podcast.

Berwick Literary Festival presents: The Present Page, a series of six workshops that incorporate drawing, movement, storytelling and sound into journalling.
Anna Chapman Parker gave an introduction to journalling as a daily practice in the first workshop. In the second session Kate Temple will look at how you can incorporate drawing into your journal.

Workshops are free to Berwick residents, booking is essential.

Jackal's First Exhibition

The Open Print Exchange is a global swap of tiny prints, started by the Open Press Project in 2021. This exhibition showed part of the annual print exchange, in which 1,086 prints were entered from 39 countries, and brought the project to Northumberland for the first time in 2025. All prints were created using a 3D-printed printing press and show the almost endless possibilities of printmaking.

Exhibiting at Jackal:

For both emerging and established artists looking to share their work, Jackal offers a supportive environment to explore ideas, collaborate on group shows, and develop artist talks and workshops. It’s a place to grow, experiment and push the boundaries of your art practice.
